Both the recent company reporting season in Australia and the latest figures coming from the United States, Europe and Asia demonstrate the same thing - recovery is definitely happening. It's just not happening as quickly as predicted.
Signs are certainly there that the Australian economy and household balance sheets are in good condition. Consumer confidence surged in August; it rose 16.5 per cent in two months and now sits well above the long-term average. Consumer spending has also been stronger than expected.

In amongst all the election material that will land in your letterbox in the next
few weeks, it's likely there will also be a letter from your superannuation fund
outlining the performance of your investments in the 2009-10 financial year.
There'll be a message pointing out the highs and the lows of the year along
with comments highlighting your fund's strengths and future prospects. And
then there will be the figures which will show what's performed well and
what hasn't across the various asset classes.
Don't just read the figures and dismiss what is written as just more fine print
— after all, it's your money the letter is talking about. But equally, don't feel
you must take immediate action and switch your money to the standout
performer from last year.

The past couple of months have certainly seen an increase in volatility in the
share market. In May alone there were 15 days when the All Ordinaries Index
rose or fell more than one per cent. Whilst it's unsettling to see your savings
buffeted on a daily basis, share markets remain an integral part of investment
portfolios, not least for the diversification they offer.
